Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu’s research concerns South Africa's relations with China as well as other East Asian economies (Japan and South Korea). It explores comparative approaches in the analysis of the developmental impact of (South) Africa-East Asia economic relations on issues of Development and Public Policy within South Africa, in the context of shifting global dynamics. He is also interested in the intersection of the Zulu language and the developmental imperative in the spectrum of decolonizing African epistemologies. He is a fellow at the Sasakawa Young Leaders Research Fellowship. 

Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu has also worked as a visiting researcher at the Institute for African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University (Jinhua, Zhejiang, China), Peking University (Beijing, China) and Institute for Global Dialogue (Pretoria, South Africa) for a period of 2 months respectively.
